Northeastern music is a generic term for any popular music from the large region of Northeastern Brazil, including both coastal and inland areas. Rhythms are often slow and plodding and derived from accordions and guitars instead of percussion instruments. Portuguese melodies and influences meet African rhythms to form\u00a0<em>maracatu\u00a0<\/em>and dance music called\u00a0<em>bal\u00e3o<\/em>. Most influential is the music from the area around Pernambuco:\u00a0<em>forr\u00f3<\/em>,\u00a0<em>frevo<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>maracatu<\/em>.
