Tony Oladipo Allen was a world-class Nigerian drummer and songwriter and one of the founders of Afrobeat. As its musical director, he worked closely with Fela Kuti. Allen was born in Lagos in 1940 and died in Paris in 2020. He taught himself to play the drums and was inspired by the jazz greats he emulated, as well as by African musical traditions and the highlight scene in his homeland.
